Sebring Highlights

December 12th 1959

Bruce McLaren sets Guinness Record

"Youngest Driver to win a World Championship Formula 1 Grand Prix"

The headlines of the day say it all:

"Dramatic win by McLaren, Brabham new World Champion"

The magnificent effort of the winner of the first Grand Prix of the United States, New Zealand’s own Bruce McLaren, who has joined the select few who have won a world championship Grand Prix race.

"Rookie Winner of Grand Prix"

"Grand Prix to McLaren, 1959 title to Brabham"

"McLaren’s win brings honour to New Zealand"

"The experts tip McLaren to become a world champion"

McLaren has justifiably earned a reputation for driving steadily and using his head. Like the great Fangio he has always adopted the policy of keeping up with the potential winners as much as possible, but without overtaxing his cars.

"McLaren’s Sebring – Brabham’s Championship"

"Drama at Sebring"

Auckland racing driver Bruce McLaren, who brilliantly won at Sebring on Saturday, has been promoted No 2 driver in the Cooper works team for next season.

As for those who remembered John Cooper’s famous victory rolls – a wonderful piece of film footage shows the ecstatic roll and then the surprise on his face when he realises it was Bruce in 1st place!

Bruce McLaren’s achievement at Sebring in 1959 is now written in history as one of the outstanding records in motor racing. December 1999 marked the 40th anniversary of this incredible record.
